The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #2 (of 6)0
The Strange Talent of Luthor Strode #2a continues the 6-comic story arc of Justin Jordan, Tradd Moore, and Felipe Sobreiro at Image Comics.
The “talent” seems to be an array of talents from viewing possible outcomes of events (minor precognition), seeing the weak spots of an opponent (i.e., viewing people as humanoids of their underlying muscle tissue), to adding muscle mass and enhanced velocity within a few weeks’ time. In addition, these sudden changes appear to be making Mr. Strode, a high school student, become paranoid about friends and foe alike in the heat of the moment. The immediate moral of the story seems to be that sudden and extreme change for the better may not be all it’s cracked up to be.
The story-line is enhanced by Luthor’s wise-cracking friend Pete and a crush on fellow high school student Petra, a red-headed girl with enough attitude to base a comic on. The minor antagonist in the story has been a high school bully who Luthor has dispatched a few times already, but I believe the action will start to happen rapidly as the major villain takes the bully as an underling and may possibly endow upon him similar talents as Mr. Strode’s. But where did Mr. Strode obtain these powers?
The opening scene in issue #1 opens with Mr. Strode dispelling bullets that were unable to penetrate his muscle layer (yet another talent, physical invulnerability) before opening a can of whoop-ass on the people responsible for the bullets. From there, the story takes a step backward and begins with how he initially started obtaining these talents by reading a book entitled ‘The Hercules Method’, with headlines of ‘Get Buff Today!!!’ Subsequent issues will reveal the source of the talents as well as continuing to exhibit the wide range of talents of the writers and artists of the series.
